Youths steal dumper truck from Bus Rapid Transit work site

Youths were spotted driving a stolen dumper truck along the Bus Rapid Transit route.

Police were called to the former Gosport railway line by a member of the public at 6.35pm on Wednesday.  The caller said he had seen four youths start the truck and drive it up and down the line where the bus route now runs.

The South East Air Support Unit police helicopter was called to help look along the route and the Terex truck was eventually found by the helicopter near Morris Close. When officers on the ground found the truck it had been abandoned and left with its engine still running.

The ignition barrel had been damaged but police say no damage was caused to anything else.

Councillor Mel Kendal, who is in charge of transport issues at Hampshire County Council, said: ‘Police have been called regarding the incident and the supplier of the vehicle will be checking the immobiliser on the truck to guard against this happening again.’

Anyone with information should contact PC Sam Warne at Gosport Police Station on 101.  Alternatively you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
