Baby taken to hospital after arson at flats

A six month old baby was taken to hospital after arsonists set fire to rubbish in a block of flats.

The black bin bag was set alight in the communal hallway of the flats in Sunbeam Way, Gosport, between midnight and 1am on Thursday.

Smoke alarms went off and the blaze was put out by a resident before firefighters arrived.

Only minor damage was caused, but a six-month-old girl and her 25-year-old mum were taken to hospital for checks as a precaution.

Detective Constable Sandi Peet said: ‘This is a serious incident that could have resulted in far more extensive damage to the flat and could have potentially endangered the lives of the residents.

‘We would like to hear from anyone who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously close to the flats around the time of the incident.

‘We would also like to hear from anyone who may have information about the person or persons responsible.’

Call police on 101.
